When you're the one everyone relies on

You're the one your family calls when something goes wrong. You mediate, organize, show up, and keep going, often while holding down a demanding job. People tell you you're doing great, and saying no to any of it feels like letting someone down.

Therapy here is for Latine adults who want to understand that pattern, not just manage it. Sessions are available in English, in Spanish, or in both.

Patterns you may recognize

  • You say yes before checking whether you have anything left to give.

  • Setting a limit with family, even a small one, leaves you replaying the conversation for days.

  • You're the steady one at work and at home, and you're not sure who you'd be if you stopped.

  • You can answer a request for a favor faster than a question about how you're doing.

  • You feel like too much of one thing for some people and not enough of it for others.

  • You've kept therapy to yourself because it can feel like airing family business.

If some of this sounds familiar, you can request a consultation to talk through what you're looking for and whether working with us fits.

You don't have to explain your family first

Many clients spend the early months of therapy translating: why a parent's call can't go unanswered, why guilt shows up after a small no, why some things stay inside the family. With Iris, that groundwork may take less time. She grew up between Puerto Rico and New York, and she knows Latine families differ by country, generation, and household. She doesn't assume yours fits a template, so you still tell it your way.

Therapy in Spanish, English, or both

Some things are easier to say in the language you first heard them in. Others only come out in English. Sessions can move between the two, sometimes within a single sentence, and you don't have to choose one at the start. If you understand more Spanish than you speak, sessions can be in English.

Depth work, not a coping checklist

Sessions are conversational and collaborative. Iris asks questions, points out patterns, and sometimes challenges how you read a situation. The aim is to understand where the habit of saying yes to everyone came from and what it may be protecting, not to hand you a list of boundary scripts. This work can be uncomfortable at times, and the pace is yours.

FAQ about Bilingual Therapy

I understand Spanish but don't speak it well. Is that a problem?

No. Many people understand Spanish from growing up with it and feel more fluent in English. Sessions can be in English, and Spanish can come in whenever it fits.

My family sees therapy as airing our business. Is it normal to feel guilty about going?

It's common, and it's worth bringing into the room rather than treating it as a reason not to start. That guilt often resembles the guilt that shows up when you say no at home. You decide what to share with family, and what you say in sessions stays private within the usual legal limits of confidentiality.

I'm not sure anything is wrong, I'm just tired. Is that enough reason to start?

You don't need a crisis or a diagnosis. Being worn down by carrying everyone else can be a reasonable place to begin. A consultation can help you sort out whether therapy makes sense right now.

Do you see clients outside New York?

Sessions are virtual. Iris is licensed in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, and clients living abroad are considered case by case.

Is therapy with Iris covered by insurance?

The Keely Group is private-pay and out-of-network, so we don't bill insurance directly. Request a consultation and we can go over fees and whether working with Iris fits what you're looking for.

Who looks after you?

You spend a lot of your time looking after other people. Therapy with Iris is time set aside for you, in English, Spanish, or both.
