The IFS Therapist’s Perspective

IFS therapists work from the perspective that each person’s core self is the primary vehicle for transformational healing. The parts that form one’s personality arise from our subconscious mind and, while the intention of each part is positive, the parts that are operating in response to wounds are, understandably, defensive and protective. If these (well-intended, but…) defensive/protective parts are not met with self-compassion, they are forced to double-down which can prevent progress both in therapy and in life.

How Is Internal Family Systems Therapy Different?

In healing those parts, the unhelpful thoughts, patterns, and associated emotions and behaviors change naturally.

Things to Keep in Mind With IFS

It is important to note that IFS is particularly compatible with spiritual practices that recognize the inherent core essence, or self, as described by esoteric traditions. When we develop the capacity to turn down the volume of the different parts by transforming them into less extreme roles, we experience more fully realized joy, peace and connection, similar to the lauded benefits of meditation and mindfulness practices, as well as somatic practices like yoga and tai chi.
